Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of primary total hip arthroplasty using ceramic on ceramic bearing implant.

Materials and Methods: Between November 1997 and October 1998, 146 cases (115 patients) of THA using ceramic on ceramic bearing cementless implant were performed. Among these cases, 108 hips of 85 patients who were followed up for more than two years were included. The average age was 43 years old (17-66). The initial diagnoses were osteonecrosis of the femoral head in 77 cases, acetabular dysplasia in 17, Legg-Perthes disease sequelae in seven, osteoarthritis in five, and other in two.

Results: The mean Hams Hip Score improved from 63 to 96 by the time of the last follow-up. On the last roentgenogram, all cases were seen to be fixed by bone in growth and there was no case with osteolysis. Femoral crack occurred in 18 cases and periprosthetic fracture occurred in one. Posterior dislocation occurred in 1 case, however there were no cases of ceramic failure.

Conclusion: The short term results of ceramic on ceramic bearing surface were very satisfactory.
